Cargo Types

Oversized Cargo

Definition

Oversized cargo is air freight that exceeds standard ULD dimensions or requires special handling procedures. It typically includes machinery exceeding 163 cm height limits, requiring freighter main decks or partial disassembly. Standard cargo dimensions are classified as Grade A (length + width + height ≤ 420cm, single side ≤ 300cm), while Grade B oversized cargo has single side dimensions of 300-500cm. Most wide-body passenger aircraft have maximum cargo hold heights of 160 cm, so cargo exceeding this must be booked on dedicated freighters at higher costs.

Examples

A Lufthansa Cargo shipment AWB 020-45671234 carries industrial printing equipment measuring 350 cm x 200 cm x 180 cm, classified as Grade B oversized cargo requiring a 30% surcharge and 3-day advance notification. An Emirates SkyCargo freighter transport AWB 176-78901234 handles a wind turbine component measuring 450 cm long, requiring main deck loading with specialized restraint equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What are the maximum dimensions for oversized cargo on passenger aircraft versus freighters?
Passenger aircraft typically limit cargo to 318 cm length, 244 cm width, and 163 cm height. Freighter main cargo holds accommodate up to 305 cm height, with a practical maximum of 300 cm for oversized cargo. Grade C special cargo exceeding 500 cm on any single side requires charter transportation with separately negotiated terms.
How much extra does oversized cargo cost compared to standard air freight?
Grade B oversized cargo (single side 300-500cm) requires 3 working days advance declaration and incurs a 20-50% surcharge above standard rates. Airlines charge based on dimensional weight using the formula Length × Width × Height ÷ 6000, with oversized pallets significantly inflating billable volume and costs.
