Build-Up
Definition
Build-Up is the process of loading and securing cargo onto aircraft pallets or into aircraft containers (Unit Load Devices) in preparation for air transport. The process includes planning ULD size and contour selection, optimizing weight distribution, and securing cargo according to IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM) and ULD Regulations (ULDR) standards. Build-Up follows specific loading principles including placing heavy cargo at the bottom with lighter items on top, ensuring even weight distribution throughout the ULD, and maintaining proper center of gravity limits for flight safety. All cargo must be secured using appropriate restraint systems including straps, nets, or tie-downs to prevent movement during flight operations.
Examples
A Lufthansa Cargo shipment with AWB 020-12345678 requires build-up of machinery parts weighing 4,500 kg on an AKE container (LD3) for transport from Frankfurt (FRA) to Chicago (ORD), following contour limits and securing heavy components with certified tie-down straps. An Emirates SkyCargo temperature-controlled shipment under AWB 176-87654321 undergoes build-up in an AKN container at Dubai (DXB), with pharmaceutical products arranged according to weight distribution requirements and secured with approved cargo nets before aircraft loading.

Frequently asked questions
- What are the IATA weight distribution requirements for ULD build-up?
- Heavy cargo must be placed at the lowest position with lighter pieces on top, and cargo must be evenly distributed over the length and width of the ULD to maintain proper center of gravity limits. Operators must ensure cargo does not exceed ULD gross weight or area load limits as specified by the ULD manufacturer.
- Which IATA manuals specify ULD build-up procedures and standards?
- ULD build-up procedures are specified in the IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM), ULD Regulations (ULDR), and Airport Handling Manual (AHM). The ULDR covers technical specifications, handling requirements for build-up and break-down, and documentation requirements for ULD operations.
