The AWB prefix 016 uniquely identifies United Airlines as the issuing carrier for routing and handling purposes. The following 7-digit serial number is the unique shipment identifier assigned by United's cargo reservation system. The final digit is a check digit calculated as the remainder when the 7-digit serial is divided by 7 (mod-7 calculation). This prefix system ensures proper routing through the global air cargo network and identifies which carrier is responsible for the shipment.

United Airlines transports live animals under the IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR), which govern container, ventilation, and species-specific handling requirements for livestock, day-old chicks, zoo animals, household pets, and laboratory animals. Bookings require species-specific documentation and approved containers; book through the cargo team with at least 48 hours notice.

Special handling processes and dedicated teams are provided for the transport of perishable shipments, valuable cargo, dangerous goods, live animals and human remains. United Cargo offers three main service levels: EXP (express priority), GEN (general freight), and SPD services to meet different shipping requirements.

United has committed to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 without relying on traditional carbon offsets, and became the first airline to purchase SAF at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, voluntarily operating with SAF at Amsterdam, Los Angeles, London Heathrow, Chicago O'Hare and San Francisco airports in 2024.
